The Shake Weight (Don’t try this at home)

Before you rush out and buy one to start toning your arms, it may be worth checking out this product review by The American Council on Exercise (ACE). It explains how this recent exercise fad is (wrongly) based on the myth that a high volume of repetitions with a light weight will create muscle “tone”.

Despite the dubious scientific claims made by the product’s vendors, The Shake Weight has managed to generate over $40 million in revenue. This popularity was probably partly due to all the free publicity it gained in the media (including a parody of the product on South Park).

As with all quick fix fitness fads the success of The Shake Weight has more to do with wishful thinking than whether the product actually works or not.
